Justice is Medicine
I am a mixed race human from a diasporic Maliseet/Wolastiqiyik First Nations family on my father’s side. I am also Irish, German, and English. While this piece honors my Native ancestry in the use of the medicine wheel, justice was paramount to me in creating the panel. Justice is not a complicated concept. Our planet and the living beings on it deserve fair treatment. This is not always the case. Ideally, with justice comes resolution of conflict resulting in balance, reciprocity, and connection. When applied consistently justice can be witnessed in culture, communities, and society. From a social justice perspective everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights, and opportunities. I see gun violence as one of the many consequences of the imbalance residing in the systems of power on the planet. Justice is not occurring for all. In my own lived experience and with those I work with I see oppression and marginalization daily resulting in unfair treatment and inequity. My panel presents a global message of accountability and action. I have also included the astrological constellations knotted with silver thread around the medicine wheel to emphasize the Universe and how humankind exists together.
