Help Save our Tomorrows
In our society, there are prominent and memorable organizing efforts to protect animal life and plant life. Efforts continue to prevent extinction, inhumane treatment of animals and irreparable damage to our planet. Greenpeace urged us to save the whales in the 1970s. Consumers can buy food grown organically and can choose cosmetics with labels that assure they were not tested on animals. This made me wonder how messages from organizations like Ducks Unlimited and Greenpeace could be reimagined to touch hearts and minds to protect people from gun violence. There are communities affected by racism, violence, systemic inequalities, and significant barriers to change. In these communities, there are young people who cannot dream of their futures because they are not sure they will live to see them. Are people and their hope not worthy of protection from extinction? Don’t people deserve to dream and to see tomorrow? Our planet, its lands, its seas, its flora, and its people are all connected. In this piece, I imagine the sun rising each day on a deserving planet. I hope you are empowered to help save tomorrows.
